A Guide to the Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme
Supporting Individual with Special Needs: A Guide to the Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme
At our school, we believe every child deserves the best care and opportunities. For families supporting children with special needs, managing healthcare can sometimes feel overwhelming. That is where the Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme comes in—a dedicated government initiative designed to provide financial peace of mind.
1. What is the Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme?
Launched by the National Trust under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Niramaya is a unique health insurance plan created specifically for persons with disabilities. It is designed to be inclusive, covering conditions like Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability (Mental Retardation), and Multiple Disabilities.
Unlike many private plans, Niramaya has no age limit and requires no pre-insurance medical tests. It operates on a reimbursement basis, meaning you can seek treatment at any hospital and later claim the expenses back. The Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme must be renewed every year before March 31st to maintain uninterrupted healthcare coverage of up to ₹1 Lakh for Persons with Disabilities (PWD’s).
2. Benefits and Coverage Breakdown
The scheme provides an annual insurance cover of ₹1,00,000 (1 Lakh) per beneficiary. To ensure all-around care, this amount is divided into specific “sub-limits” for different types of treatment:
| Category | Coverage Limit | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Hospitalization | ₹55,000 | Corrective surgeries (up to ₹40,000) and non-surgical hospital stays (up to ₹15,000). |
| Outpatient (OPD) | ₹19,000 | Medicines, pathology, and diagnostic tests (up to ₹15,000), plus dental care (up to ₹4,000). |
| Ongoing Therapies | ₹20,000 | Physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. |
| Alternative Medicine | ₹4,000 | Treatments under AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy). |
| Transportation | ₹2,000 | Travel costs to and from medical facilities. |
3. Step-by-Step Guide to Applying
Applying for Niramaya is a straightforward process handled through Registered Organizations (ROs).
- Step 1: Locate a Centre: Find the nearest RO (like an authorized NGO or government centre) through the National Trust website.
- Step 2: Submit Documents: Visit the RO with your child’s documents. They will verify the originals and upload scanned copies to the portal.
- Step 3: Pay the Fee: Pay the nominal enrolment fee online or through the RO.
- Step 4: Receive Your Card: Once approved, a Health ID Card is generated. You can download this e-card directly from the Niramaya portal or collect it from the RO.
Documents Required:
- Disability Certificate: Issued by a government hospital/authority.
- UDID Card/Enrolment Number: Now mandatory for all applications.
- Identity & Address Proof: Aadhaar card of both the child and guardian.
- Photographs: Recent passport-size photos of the beneficiary.
- Bank Details: A copy of the bank passbook for claim reimbursements.
4. Concessions for BPL Families
The government provides significant financial relief for families in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category:
- Enrolment Fee: Only ₹250 (compared to ₹500 for APL families).
- Required Proof: You must submit a valid BPL Card or an Income Certificate issued by a state-authorized officer as proof of economic status.
